Description

Byatt really has done a succesful tour de force in recreating the Victorian time period: the book contains lots of long poems and stories in this Victorian style, very concise, meticulously detailed, full of mythological references and floral and animal descriptions. These detail that LaMotte fell pregnant due to her relationship with Ash but did not want to tell him. In short, the whole book is a gigantic tease – which is certainly satisfying on an intellectual level" but, "Possession's true centre is a big, red, beating heart.

I can find no flaw in Byatt's telling and I think it is kind of laziness not to want to put in any hard work yourself for the pleasure of such a tale. In it, LaMotte explains that she had given birth to a daughter who had lived happily without knowing her parentage. I wasn’t in it to find things I had never found before, to revisit a personal classic to explore ideas that I had left behind for the time when I was ready to connect with them in the way that they deserved.Every brick breathed fresh air; each had been stripped and drenched with blow-torch and high-speed jet, so that the house lay revealed beneath its original skin.

But I run on again; assuredly you have determined on your own best ways of presenting the topic, you who are so wise and learned in your retirement. Did you not find it as strange as I did, that we should so immediately understand each other so well? Now a lot of people say that they abandon this book because they find it too pretentious, or too self-gratifying, etc. And now near the end, “in the calm of mind all passion spent,” I think of you again with clear love. But it was just possible that Ash's own Vico had marginalia missed even by the indefatigable Cropper.

An interesting and at least as important theme is that on the female condition and feminism, now and then.

The protrusive force behind the story is the thrilling quest for the truth behind the secret relationship between the famous poet Randolph Henri Ash and the rather enigmatic Christabel LaMotte (both fictional characters, but Byatt has recreated their life and writings in every detail); the results of this quest lead – to the astonishment of the literary scientists – to a completely different view on the characters and their art; and let’s be honest, it really is a very romantic story (although with a rather distressing end). He and LaMotte had a short, passionate affair; it led to the suicide of LaMotte's companion (and possibly lover), Blanche Glover, and the secret birth of LaMotte's illegitimate daughter during a year spent in Brittany. I needed some beauty in my life so badly, and this is how you know the disease of bibliophilia has really set in- books are what I turn to when I need that. Stuart Evers recently wrote an interesting blog expressing this distaste and what he termed an " allergy" to AS Byatt.
