Description

In this fascinating book, Alan Watts explores man's quest for psychological security, examining our efforts to find spiritual and intellectual certainty in the realms of religion and philosophy. Many practicing Christians genuinely do believe in an actual future heaven and hell, as opposed to being an analogy for enlightenment and the vicious circles we engage in on this earth.

This state comes about because we crave security, despite that this is both impossible and undesireable. Glas i misli Alana Votsa sam prvi put čula u numeri "Dreams" grupe Nuages a guglajući dobila sliku gospodina evropskog porekla sa ducktail bradom i u kimonu. I should also note that if you are not hearing these things for the first time, you will probably find the book repetitive (though I found it rather calming). This pattern of “is it deeply profound or nonsense” alternates back and forth until you’re not quite sure anymore. In simple yet beautiful language, Alan Watts offers a explanation on how these thoughts arises due to illusions of language and the idea of the self. Its interest is not in itself, but in the people and problems of which it is aware; these are 'itself.

But the ability to plan for the future is offset by the 'ability' to dread pain and to fear of the unknown. In spite of these similarities, however, Watts' fascinating blend of eastern and western thinking and his own distinctive turn of phrase give him a memorable voice all of his own. This inaccessibility of the philosophy could explain why it didn’t become the dominant understanding in most religions, since most people couldn’t reach past the metaphors and so, instead, hung onto them as literal truth.I feel such a dressing down does almost a disservice to the book (as it does with the much later The Power of Now by Eckhart Tolle, which expounds on very similar themes). An amazing book that I will come back to again later and he says so much more than what I am going to mention here. Because if someone asked me what I thought of this book in conversation, that would be my likely response.
