On that day, I was privileged to visit a local village to hear stories of reconciliation from perpetrators and survivors of the genocide. Macaulay's equally insightful second autobiographical volume, Breadboy, has now become another slice of music theatre, premiered after a Covid delay at The Lyric Theatre, but partly because the material is more complicated, it hasn't translated so well. The day I met Juvens in Kigali I had been visiting his country to learn about the incredible work of reconciliation since the genocide in 1994, when a million people were killed in a hundred days.

TONY MACAULAY grew up at the top of the Shankill Road in Belfast, an experience which has shaped his life, and about which he has written in Paperboy and Breadboy. In cleanliness and purity Leslie was the complete opposite of my first employer, but he shared Oul’ Mac’s difficulties in the dental department. Tony Macaulay has asserted his right under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1988 to be identified as the author of this work.

Additionally it gives an insight into what it was like to grow up in working class Belfast at the height of the troubles. The fizzy drinks could occasionally be problematic because they often exploded on opening due to all the movement going over potholes where buses had burnt, but most of the other merchandise was warm, fresh, inviting and relatively inert. Leslie hadn’t asked for a written reference from my previous employer, Oul’ Mac, the newsagent, which was lucky because it might have presented a difficulty.

While Paperboy was set in 1975 when the author had just turned 12 and had bagged himself a new job selling the Belfast Telegraph, Breadboy takes place in 1977. on my first Saturday, I nodded knowingly, but inside I was thinking, ‘How am I going to get up at six o’clock every Saturday morning? We’d love to see young people who can sing, dance and act and the roles will be cast depending on their strengths. The two overlapping shells close securely ensuring hygienic storage and are hinged so that the upper shell opens for easy access. The breadmen in those other old-fashioned bread vans had to dismount and walk around to the rear of their vans to access the loaves using a long wooden pole to withdraw drawers full of bread onto the street. There was a satisfying moment when Tony rejects Judy, the girl he's hankered after from the start and who never remembered his name.
