One of my favorite things about the horror genre is how it’s able to distill core themes about our everyday lives – good vs. Second of all, the book functions extremely well as a disaster scenario — a vivid picture of what could happen if the human race allows globalization to collapse.

Your favorite novel in which a flu pandemic wipes out civilization in a matter of weeks (yikes) and a band of entertainers wander the decimated land, putting on Shakespeare plays for the survivors. So, perhaps because of this, Tremblay’s novel doesn’t dwell in the black and white, instead choosing to lurk in the murky gray shadows of humanity. But humans, like any invasive species, will find a way, and so Ish meets Em, and they build a community of survivors, new and old—but instead of rebuilding the world they knew, they must watch as the younger generation adapts and begins to build a new society based on the world that is left.

The best and worst thing about this novel is how close it feels to being possible (it is set four years from now).Together, they envision a near future where oil and gas stay in the ground; where a caring economy provides social supports for all; where wealth is redistributed from the bloated billionaire class; and where stolen land is rightfully reclaimed under the jurisdiction and sovereignty of Indigenous peoples. The book is generally fast paced but at times it did slow down, especially when Lowrie is contemplating things. Lowrie and Shen are the youngest people left in the world after a virus eighty-five years ago caused mass infertility across the whole planet.
