A: The original motivation for bringing Rachel’s storyline into the sequel was to see how she felt about the death of her husband. Libby’s boyfriend, journalist Miller Roe, has tracked down Phin’s location to Botswana, Africa, where Phin is a game reserve guide.

I want to thank Najma Finlay, Penguin Random House and Lisa Jewell for allowing me to read a copy of this book in exchange for my personal thoughts. I had always assumed that Henry would go to Botswana, but I changed tack at the last minute and sent him to Chicago instead. This is the sequel to The Family Upstairs , but you don’t have to read The Family Upstairs (which I barely remember) to enjoy The Family Remains.I had mentioned her so fleetingly in the first novel that I felt like she was just waiting to be brought fully to life and I wouldn’t know who she was or what her marriage had been like until I started writing her. Q: You must have felt you knew the characters pretty well when you started writing this follow-up, but as you wrote, did they develop in any ways that surprised you? Because that creepy, intense, extremely eerie, spin tingling “Family Upstairs” book rocked my world! We mainly hear from Henry, Lucy, Rachel and DI Samuel Owusu, who is investigating the remains of a young woman that have been found in the River Thames.

Along with Miller, it was her job to find out what had happened at the house on Cheyne Walk, to uncover its secrets and rediscover her family. The only interesting (though immensely unlikeable) character in this story is Henry whose obsession with Phin is the only engaging part of the narrative but only up to a point because after all that build-up, the climax will either have you rolling your eyes and/or laughing at its absurdity and/or throwing the book at the nearest wall in frustration (please take care not to do that if you’re using your e-reader, it’s not worth it! The reason you’re so drawn into this sequel: your desire to find out what happened to those characters! For many years, Henry blaming himself for making Phin sick with a love potion, but when the two men reunite, Phin tells Henry, “I wasn’t ill from your love potion, Henry. And as I told, the bones of a young woman found in Thames and another murder case in France may be linked to the Lamb siblings! The fragile and lonely Henry, with his self-esteem issues, is feeling a tangle of mixed emotions and feelings, not all straight forward, he is obsessed with Phin Thomsen, wanting to know where he is, with rumours of him being in Africa. And Phin goes back to Botswana, but now has a close relationship with his daughter, Libby and his mother and sister down in Cornwall. The bones are those of a young woman who had suffered blunt force trauma, DCI Samuel Owusu investigates as forensic evidence leads him to a Chelsea mansion in Cheyne Walk where 3 decades ago, three dead bodies were found in the kitchen. Her father was well off and offered Rachel a comfortable life style and the ability to design, produce and sell her jewelry.
