Usually I read Ronson on the plane while en route to some vacation destination—he makes for perfect travel reading. S. Lewis' trilemma as an impressive and unassailable logical argument, even though perusal of the Wikipedia article will indicate that the trilemma has had serious argument since it was first presented. Apparently actual sympathy for the victims, or interviews with *their* friends and family, couldn't have been worked into the chapter.

It's a good one to bring along on a plane trip or if, like me, you don't like to read for long periods. Ronson has a way of humanizing the worst or most ridiculous among us, and this is a beautiful thing. My brother in law is not a reader but I know he will enjoy the different quirky stories with Robson’s inimitable take on things. Now, as a journalist on an investigative mission, shouldn't Ronson at least discuss whether this was genuine Chinese? He is the author of many bestselling books, including Frank: The True Story that Inspired the Movie, Lost at Sea: The Jon Ronson Mysteries, The Psychopath Test, The Men Who Stare at Goats and Them: Adventures with Extremists. They could have explained that a 40-year-old man with fantastic amounts of financial and social power, not to mention years of experience in selecting and grooming victims, would have been skilled in manipulation.

Don't get me wrong, I am enjoying this, just often left feeling cut short at the end of each and every chapter. A third talks about "Indigo Children", AKA kids affected with ADD whose parents are convinced that they are advanced spiritual beings. But I wonder whether any act of sex, when described with such precision, would sound equally unpleasant. You get in to them then they abruptly end with one of the author's mundane comments about how that person/people/organisation applies to or affects his life and family, and no closure to the actual story at hand. The rest of the chapter is taken up with interviews with Chris' friends who talk about their empathy for his actions, and also a charming joke about prostitutes. This kind of material fascinates me, and this book scratched that itch in the back of my brain for just learning about people. His investigation of the suicide of a British man who fell victim to predatory lenders and the techniques those lenders used to find that man is critical reading for understanding the financial crisis; anyone interested in cruise vacations would do well to read his piece about just how many people go missing from those ships ever year, and how little is done about it because of the fuzzy jurisdiction of convenience-flagged ships in international waters and the desire of the cruise industry to suppress any story that interferes with their happy-go-party image.
